Phonics and Spelling: Our school uses the Read, Write Inc phonics scheme programme from nursery, as well as the Fresh Start intervention programme for our older children. We also use Read, Write, Inc spellings across Key Stage Two.
Reading: Reading is celebrated across the school and we aim to develop a love of reading in our children from a very early age. Children in Reception and Key Stage One have home reading books linked to the Read, Write Inc phonics scheme that we follow, whilst our Key Stage Two children can choose from a wide range of fiction and nonfiction books available to them near their classrooms. We encourage children to choose a book that interests them and teach them from the outset how to select books that are at the appropriate level to interest, yet challenge them. As well as this, all children have a school library book and children and parents can access the library and the school book exchange together before school each day.
Mathematics: Our school uses PowerMaths resources to support our maths teaching, which is based on the mastery approach. As well as number skills, children are taught to be curious, inquisitive learners and we try to embed maths in as many other curriculum areas as possible to enhance pupils’ learning.
